Introduction of Japanese Culture Through Personnel Exchanges

Cooperation is extended to educate personnel through mutual exchange programs, such as the dispatching and inviting of culture specialists to and from other countries, upon the request of developing nations. Furthermore, collaborative research on cultural properties and the preservation of cultural heritages are promoted.

Performing Arts

We are working to introduce Japan's outstanding traditional and contemporary art forms to the world, including stage and performing arts such as dance, music and drama. We are also introducing stage arts from overseas that are relatively unknown in Japan. We are striving for distinctive and dynamic arts exchanges through co-productions and information exchanges between the artists of Japan and of other nations.

Visual Arts
Visual arts are art forms that have the ability to appeal directly to audiences, surmounting the language barrier. Ancient through contemporary Japanese visual arts are being introduced worldwide and visual arts from around the world that were previously inaccessible for commercial reasons are being exhibited in Japan. In addition, the foundation seeks opportunities to contribute to world-class culture creation by organizing overseas international art festivals such as the Venezia Biennale.

Grass Roots and Youth Exchanges

We are making contributions toward nurturing youth for future international exchanges and we are activating networks through the support of grass roots and youth exchange programs. We are also engaged in the invitation of high school teachers from abroad and in human resource development.

Audiovisual Arts

The Japan Foundation produces international versions of Japanese television programs (including dramas, documentaries and cultural and feature films) and offers them to overseas television stations as part of its activities to introduce Japanese culture overseas. Furthermore, the Japan Foundation plans film festivals featuring films from overseas nations that have few chances to be screened in Japan and provides assistance to international film festivals in Japan.

Publication
In cooperation with domestic and overseas publishers, the foundation is making efforts to distribute Japan-related books in various languages and to translate exceptional Japanese books from the humanities, the social sciences and the arts into foreign languages. In addition, the foundation promotes Japanese books by participating in international book fairs, and Japanese Book News is provided to each and every publisher in the world to deliver up-to-date information on recent Japanese publications.
